Descripción corta
Remains of the fortified enclosure built in the 9th century during the Muslim occupation of the city
Descripción larga
Following earlier Carolingian sieges, the Caliphate of Córdoba ordered Amrus ibn Umar, governor of Waska, to build the city walls in the year 876. This stone fortification had an oval shape and extended for approximately 1,800 metres, much of it built upon an earlier salagón stone base. It originally featured 90 towers and 9 gates.
The preserved remains are mainly located around today’s Ronda de Montearagón. There stands the Torreón del Amparo, once connected to two now-disappeared buildings known as “the barracks”. This area is also home to the Puerta de Montearagón, popularly called “La Porteta”, the only surviving gate of the wall, offering wide panoramic views of the surroundings and the Castle of Montearagón.
